Click on the links above for graduation and promotion guidelines at each level. Below is an explanation of the process used to change these requirements in 2002. The DeForest Area School District's Board of Education approved the graduation and promotion policies in May 2002, effective September 2002. The policies are the result of 16 months of work by a K-12 staff committee. A parent representative was also involved. These policies meet State of Wisconsin (Department of Public Instruction) requirements as well as addresses the recommendations from the Framework for Our Future conference and subsequent Vision Element Study Teams. The committee worked with the following goals and focus: - Standardize retention procedures.
- Develop policies that follow the Vision of the district, especially, "...honors knowledge, respects individuals, demands excellence, fosters life-long learning, and supports relationships that strengthen families and communities."
- Insure the involvement of the family as early as possible increasing the chance of success for the student.
- Develop a plan that not only views the possibility of retention, but more importantly, stresses the options available for success.
The committee's research included policies from other Wisconsin school districts and information from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). The Department of Public Instruction requires school districts to include a minimum number of components at each level. They are as follows: High School graduation requirements - Credits
- High school graduation test (pending adoption)
- Teacher recommendation
- Performance
Promotion of students in grades 4-8 - Results from Wisconsin Knowledge & Concepts tests
- Teacher recommendation
- Performance
