History:

The DASD Board of Education approved implementation of the DeForest Area Community Based Four-Year-Old Kindergarten program at their December 13, 2010 meeting.  We are excited to use the 2010-2011 school year to plan for this program. How did we get here?

A task force, with representation from parents, school staff, and licensed child facilities, conducted an eight-month study in 2008 and 2009 to determine the feasibility of a four-year-old kindergarten program for DASD families.  In January 2010, the task force recommended the following:

  • Implement a partial-day, community based four-year-old kindergarten program in the 2011-2012 school year.
  • Design the program to be voluntary and tuition-free.
  • Include a parent outreach component to include training sessions on various topics of interest, newsletters, guest speakers, parent/teacher conferences, etc.
  • Locate classes primarily in community agencies and provide instruction through a community agency employed DPI licensed teacher with a community agency employed educational assistant.

Since then, extensive planning has been done for all aspects of the program.

On Monday, December 13 the DASD Board of Education considered the final proposal to implement the 4K program (called "Get Together 4 Kids", of GT4K for short) beginning with the 2011-12 school year.  The proposal was approved.
