 | | | Introduction Young adult books are being challenged and even banned, and we are on the case to defend reading! On one front, parents are attacking the legitimacy of the YA genre. They’re saying, “Why are you taking time to teach young adult books when the classics are being neglected?” On another front, other parents are attacking these books because of their seeming “risky” themes. As students, we are not going to sit idly by and let these books be taken out of circulation. Let’s undertake knowing our rights as readers. We will accomplish this by examing the ALA Freedom to Read statement and the Library Bill of Rights. We will also understand the difference between a book being challenged and being banned. This assignment will then involve reading a young adult work of fiction with the aim being to determine several things: is YA literature a legitimate form of fiction? Are the subject matters appropriate for young adults? How accurate are they in presenting life? |
