DeForest Schools is proud to say that we are in our fifth year of bringing healthy, farm fresh produce to our kids' plates! In September alone we have served locally grown cucumbers, grape tomatoes, kale, fresh herbs and eggs, provided by the Fifth Season, a Wisconsin farmer cooperative. And not only does DeForest Schools serve locally grown green peppers, potatoes and cranberries, but also local yogurts, sour cream, cottage cheese and milk produced from dairies right here in Wisconsin. You may have noticed the new Farm to School icons on the menus this year. These mark the special farm to school steamed veggies like zucchini and yellow squash, and the fresh apples from Lapacek's Apple Orchard in Poynette!
Each year DeForest Food & Nutrition Services Department strives to make connections that will empower us to bring in more farm fresh, local foods for our menus. It is important for students to be exposed to fresh, locally grown foods; these foods often have a better flavor and are packed with nutrients! In this way, we help keep local food dollars in the community, while at the same time providing our kids with fresh delicious and nutritious foods!
